Mr. Leinwand is an expert in methodology of teaching mathematics in K – 12 and curriculum development. He recently retired from the Connecticut State Department of Education after serving as Mathematics Consultant for 22 years. In this role he was responsible for a broad array of activities, including curriculum development, professional development, program evaluation, and student and teacher assessment, as they relate to the improvement of school mathematics.
Mr. Leinwand is a former member of the Mathematical Sciences Education Board of the National Research Council and is past president of the 2,600 members National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics. He has served on the National Assessment Item Development Panel and chaired NCTM Professional Development and Status Advisory Committee. In addition, he has recently completed a 3-year term on the NCTM Board of Directors. Mr. Leinwand is also a senior author of Scott Foresman Addison Wesley™’s K-8 mathematics program. He has written numerous articles and his new book,
Sensible Mathematics: A Guide for School Leaders was just published by Heinemann. Mr. Leinwand is a frequent speaker at state, regional and national conferences.
